Product Options

The following are the different nCube product options. Listing what's in the box and how it will benefit you with anything from controling your hot water to turning off any unwanted appliances around the home.

  nCube Hub

This Pack Contains:

1X Hub

The nCube hub is the brains of the solution.  If you'd prefer not to take advantage of one of the packs or already have a number of compatible devices then purchase the nCube hub on it's own and optionally choose any other individual devices too.

nCube CLIMATE Pack (Boiler/ Hot Water Control)

This Pack Contains:

1X Hub
1X Thermostat
1X Boiler Controller

Energy prices have risen by 170% in the past 10 years and forecasts show they may double again within the next five years, with nCube climate you could save you as much as £150.00 off your annual energy bill.

We all know how difficult heating controls are to modify so frequently they are left on default settings.  Leaving the heating and hot water on whilst on holiday, away for a weekend or even just when you're late coming home is expensive.

The nCube climate solution gives you Heating & Hot Water control right from your smartphone, tablet or laptop whether you are at home or out and about. Multiple users can use it (unlike a lot of other systems) and you're not limited to only a few changes in the day, virtually any number of schedule settings can be defined (again, unlike a lot of other systems).

nCube ZONE Pack (Radiator/ Heating Control)

This Pack Contains:

1X Hub
5X Radiator Controls

You could save up to 23% off your energy costs by not heating empty rooms - for example bedrooms that are empty most of the day.

Multiple users can use it and you're not limited to only a few changes in the day, virtually any number of schedule settings can be defined. If you don't want to change your existing system, or have something like Nest or Hive installed you can still use nCube zone.

nCube ILLUMINATION Pack (Lighting Control)

This Pack Contains:

1X Hub
3X Lighting Control Devices

wouldn't it be great to easily set a few lights to come on/off according to a schedule whilst away on holiday or for the weekend or even if getting home late one evening.

nCube illumination let's you control lights right from your smartphone, tablet or laptop.  But nCube also tracks the energy consumption of each individual light so you can get better info on where else your energy costs are going and even WHO in the house is using it all up!

Control can be either on/off or dimming (select the dimming option) and can be automated either to your own schedule or when someone enters/leaves or even combine more than one light, or plugged-in device, into a group.

The nCube illumination pack gives you the nCube hub (and power lead & LAN cable) and three lighting control devices.

nCube PLUG-IN Pack (Appliance Control)

This Pack Contains:

1X Hub
3X Plug-In Devices

A recent research report* showed that as much as £86 per year is wasted by things plugged in and left on idle - that's things like chargers, TVs, Blueray players, stereo equipment, PC flat screens and printers on standby.

These plug-in devices give you the ability to schedule on/off times, dim plugged in lamps, and can even be used to measure energy consumption.

The nCube plug-in pack gives you the nCube hub and three of the plug-in devices.

  1. What is the Dashboard?
  2. What does the Holiday Mode do?
  3. I turned up the temperature for a room but the heating didn’t come on - why not?

  6. How do I wire up the boiler controller?

  8. Why do I need to choose a ‘Main’ thermostat?
  9. What is a Zap?
  10. What happens if my home Internet connection fails?

1. What is the Dashboard?
The Dashboard is where you can manage your various aspects of your Smart Home.  When in the Dashboard view, you’ll see the list of available schedules - typically this includes the Main Home Heating, the Hot Water and then any Zones into which you’ve placed Danfoss radiator valves or Everspring Plug-In Controllers.  The room Zones only appear if you have placed a Danfoss valve or Everspring Controller in that room.

2. What does the Holiday Mode do?
When you’re away you probably don’t want the heating and hot water running to the same schedule.  So instead of revising/deleting all your schedules, the Holiday Mode sets the temperature to the default temperature (for example 9 degrees) and turns the hot water off thereby saving you energy.

3. I turned up the temperature for a room but the heating didn’t come on - why not?
The TRVs (Thermostatic Radiator Valves) are designed to save energy by not keeping infrequently used rooms at the same temperature as the rest of the home.  They do not ‘Call for heat’ so setting a room to be warmer than the Main heating will not cause the boiler to come on.

4. Which rooms should I put the radiator valves in?
The TRVs (Thermostatic Radiator Valves) are designed to save energy by not keeping infrequently used rooms at the same temperature as the rest of the home.  They do not ‘Call for heat’ so setting a room to be warmer than the Main heating will not cause the boiler to come on.
There is no need to place TRVs on every radiator in the house.  In fact it’s better to place these just in rooms you tend to use infrequently and will therefore benefit from not being kept at the same temperature as the rest of the home - for example bedrooms, study/home office, dining room, etc.  Generally use them on rooms you can close the door to as the room will gradually cool down.

5. What if I don’t have a Hot Water tank, is nCube still compatible?
Yes.  When connecting the Horstmann/Secure Receiver (technically it’s called the Receiver - it’s the white box that replaces any existing boiler timer you might already have) you should find that instead of 6 wires there will be only 4 to connect.
The device comes with the manufacturers own wiring instructions - you MUST rely on these to get the wiring correct.
Once wired and the Thermostat marked as ‘Main’ you will still see a schedule for the Heating and another for the Hot Water but the Hot Water schedule is irrelevant to you so ignore it (we’re going to offer an option to hide this in the next software update).

6. How do I wire up the boiler controller?
The Horstmann/Secure boiler Receiver device (technically it’s called the Receiver - it’s the white box that replaces any existing boiler timer you might already have) follows standardised wiring methods and sometimes the existing backplate is even directly compatible.  The device comes with the manufacturers own wiring instructions - you MUST rely on these to get the wiring correct.
In some cases the Heating and Hot Water circuits need to be swapped so it’s really important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and check how your existing Receiver/Timer device is wired before attaching the new one.
If you have any doubt, we strongly recommend you ask an electrician to do this bit for you.

7. I just added a Radiator valve - why can’t I see the schedule in the Dashboard?
If the Room zone schedule isn’t listed in the Dashboard then most likely you have not placed the Danfoss radiator valve in a Room zone.  Go to Devices, select Devices without a Zone and you should find the radiator valve listed there.  Click to edit and then assign it to a room.  When you next go to the Dashboard the room should now be listed.
If you add more than one Danfoss valve to the same room they’ll automatically get grouped so you still only manage one schedule for that whole room/zone.

8. Why do I need to choose a ‘Main’ thermostat?
The nCube system allows you to have more than one thermostat (such as the Horstmann/Secure thermostats) and multiple Danfoss valves.  However only one of these can be used to tell the boiler to turn on/off.  So we need you to decide which of your thermostats is going to be the ‘Main’ thermostat.  The system will warn you if you accidentally try to set another thermostat as the Main.

9. What is a Zap?
A Zap is a way to automate things.  We discovered that people want to either just control things or to dive into automating.  So the Devices tile is where to go to just control things whilst Zaps is where you can automate anything.  Typically a Zap is where you want something to happen because something else just happened.  For example Phil arrived home so turn all the lights on.  Or if I press this Light Switch, then turn down the radiator in that room, turn off the 4-gang plug-in and turn off the desk light (or vice versa).
Zaps are very flexible, so experiment with your own ideas and feel free to contact us for more advice or just to share what you’ve automated.

10. What happens if my home Internet connection fails?
nCube is unique as it does not rely on an Internet connection to work when you are at home.  When your laptop, tablet or smartphone is connected to your home wifi network, you are connected directly to the nCube hub even if your home Internet connection fails.  Nearly all other systems place logic on the ‘cloud’ (i.e. their hosted servers) meaning as soon as the internet connection fails you can’t change your heating schedule with your laptop, tablet or smartphone - we don’t think that’s very Smart.
