Summer is upon us whether we think it is or not.  Warmer weather and more sunshine are not only great news for our mood, they also mean that we can turn off most of our heating and lighting.

Now, we don’t like to think of the English sun coming with any down-sides but actually it can often lead to using more energy in other areas.

Potential Problems: Areas where you might be getting a little hot and bothered:

  • As you get a little hot you might be tempted to use air con or electric fan that will use stealthily use power.  This may be a particular problem in areas with lots of windows;
  • And whilst you may be enjoying the sun’s rays in your conservatory, stop in front of a glass room for too long and you probably start to get a little hot and bothered;
  • Whilst the your plants love lots of sunlight they also like lots of water so you might find your water bills creeping up as you water your garden more;
  • As you shower more to cool down hair and skin may start to get irritated dull or even dried out;
  • Hayfever kicks in and gets worse throughout the season;
  • Bottled water and drinks are suddenly a household expense.

Solutions: What you can do about it:

  • Solar film: Ideally you’d enjoy the warmth of summer without getting too hot in the first place.  So where you have windows, we’d install solar film to prevent rooms getting too hot in the first place.  You should also make sure you’re well insulated as it can actually stop the heating getting in- what’s more, you’ll be prepared for winter;
  • Rainwater harvesting: Utilise a free water source buy rainwater harvesting, however much space you have;
  • Shower filter: Irritants in the water are more noticeable the more you use the water.  I’m not suggesting not showering but instead, you could easily add a filter to your shower to get rid of the chemicals and bacteria.  (general filtration);
  • 2000 drinking water filter: The symptoms of hayfever are caused by the build-up of histamine in the body (which is why people take anti-histamines).  Drinking water helps prevent the body creating histamine.  If you use a water filter, then the you can happily drink tap water without worries about containments.  (general filtration);
  • 2000 drinking water filter: Quite rightly, in summer you, your friends and family will be drinking more water to stay hydrated (and you’ll need to).  This also means that you’ll be spending more on bottled water: a waste, inconvenient, a hassle and costly.  You’d save a lot of money by drinking tap water but there is a worry about what’s in the water.  Instead install a point-of-use water filter so you can refill your bottles time and time and again and wash all the fruit and vegetables you’ll be eating more of too.
